Introducing the New VoltDB Command Line

Introducing the New VoltDB Command Line

November 07, 2016

VoltDB v6.6 introduced a new, simplified command line for configuring and starting VoltDB databases. The new commands, INIT and START, replace four previous commands. In fact, 90% of the time you only need one command, START, because you only need to initialize any given database once.

And you no longer need to specify the deployment file on the START command, since VoltDB stores and maintains an up-to-date deployment for you after you initialize the root directory.

The documentation and examples have been updated to use the new commands. The self-paced training available from VoltDB University also will be updated in a future release. In the meantime, we’ve added a bonus lesson that describes the new commands and explains how they make starting a VoltDB database easier.

You can find the bonus lesson at the following link:

While we were at it, we also enhanced the user interface to the VoltDB University lessons themselves. The interface now includes a navigation strip at the bottom of the window that lets you move backwards and forwards through the slides at any time. It also provides a counter so you can see your current location within the lesson.

Give it a try and let us know what you think. All of the VoltDB University lessons are available from our website here.
